An AES, LEED, and CO chemisorption study of copper overlayers on Rh(100)

چکیده
A model bimetalhc system ~/~(~~) has been prepared by the thermal ~a~~at~o~ of copper onto a ~{~~) surface and studied by Auger ehztron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and CO chemisorption. At 115 K, the copper overlayer growth follows a layer-by-layer mechanism at least to the third layer. The first monolayer grows pseudorno~~~~~ with respect to the ~1~) substrate whiIe the second monoIayer grows epitaxially with a Cn(1t.W) structure. Upon annealing the copper film, the first two Iayers are stable up to the copper deacon temperature while the copper deposits in excess of two layers nuchzate to form t~dim~sio~ copper ishmds on top of the copper bilayer, For CO ~be~so~ti#n, cupper blocks rhodium sites on a on~to-oue basis and induces a weakening of the R&-Co bond. CO on monoIa~er copper on Rh(1tB) exhibits an enhanced bonding strength with respect to bulk copper. The CO ~he~so~tive properties are discussed in the context of the electronic and geometric st~ctures of this model bimetallic system.

An Aes and Leed Study of Carbon and Oxygen Sorption on Copper Surfaces
In cleaning copper surfaces by ion bombardment and annealing, carbon appears very often as a final contaminant which is very difficult to eliminate totally compared with other contaminants (0, S, Cl). Even during ion bombardment, surfaces are easily contaminated by carbon and the degree of contamination depends on the cleaning conditions. The main cause of the contamination may be the decomposi...
متن کاملAn IR study of CO surface diffusion on submonolayer metal overlayers
The adsorption and surface diffusion of CO on Pd/W( 110) and Cu/Rh( 100) surfaces have been studied using infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRA.?). For CO adsorbed on 0.14 ML Pd on W ( I lo), the CO is found to diffuse from Pd to W at approximately 200 K. Likewise, CO adsorbed on ~0.1 ML Cu on Rh( 100) will diffuse from the Cu to the Rh at approximately 250 K. In addition, the CO ads...
متن کاملoverlayer growth and chemisorption of CO and D,
The overlayer growth of cobalt on Mo(ll0) and the adsorption of CO and deuterium on Co/Mo(llO) have been studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). Co grows layer by layer on Mo(ll0) at a sample temperature of 115 K. Annealing multilayers of Co on Mo(ll0) to > 400 K results in the formation of three-dimension...
متن کاملInteraction of Ultrathin Films of Cu with Rh ( 100 ) and Ru ( 0001 ) : An XPS Study
The interaction of ultrathin fdms of Cu with Rh(100) and Ru(0001) has been examined by using X-ray photoelectron spectrapcopy (XPS). The effects of surface annealing temperature, adsorbate coverage (film thickness), and CO chemisorption were investigated. The XPS data show that the atoms in a monolayer of Cu supported on Rh( 100) or Ru(0001) are electronically perturbed with respect to the surf...
متن کاملMEASUREMENTS ON THE POSSIBLE FERROMAGNETISM OF Rh
Several studies [see for instance Goldoni 1999 and Zhu 1991], both theoretical and experimental, have speculated with the possibility of Rh, naturally paramagnetic, becoming ferromagnetic. This effect might be possible due to the similarity of the electronic band structure of Rh with those of the ferromagnetic metals and the splitting of its 4s levels in situations of low dimensionality. This f...
